Scientists make mind-reading discovery

Professionals in medical sales jobs may witness an industry shake-up after scientists revealed they were closer to reading people’s minds.

According to a study by researchers at the University of California, stroke patients are among the many speech-deprived candidates who could benefit from new technology that could determine what they are thinking.

Published in the journal PLoS Biology, it was revealed researchers uncovered words imagined in a patient’s mind by decoding electrical activity in a part of the auditory system known as the superior temporal gyrus (STG).

Scientists Robert Knight and Edward Chang were then able to interpret words based on the pattern of STG activity, although more work needs to be done to refine the word choice possibilities.

Professor of psychology and neuroscience at UC Berkley Mr Knight said: “This is huge for patients who have damage to their speech mechanisms.

“If you could eventually reconstruct imagined conversations from brain activity, thousands of people could benefit.”

Last month, Scotland’s chief medical officer Sir Harry Burns warned that obesity, poor diet and excessive alcohol consumption were all having detrimental effects on the nation’s population.
