Australian employment dips 0.2%
Conditions for those in Australian sales jobs may be tightening as the employment rate fell by 0.2 per cent over the 12 months ending in December, recent figures revealed.
Last month employment stood at approximately 11.4 million, representing a decline of 2.1 per cent on November 2011, a study from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed.
The unemployment rate remained steady at 5.3 per cent as 634,200 people made their exit from the workplace.
However, according to a report by The Sydney Morning Herald, staffing levels in the outback are suffering as Australians prefer not to enter the jobs market in remote areas.
As a result, tourism minister Martin Ferguson and immigration minister Chris Bowen are considering opening up the visa program to a wider breadth of foreign workers to fill the void.
Property manager of the Bluestone Motor Inn in Tennant Creek, Scott Berry, explained why locals are not filling the vacancies despite dwindling employment figures.
He told the news provider: “A lot of people out this way … don’t want to work in the heat.”
