ABS: retail sales remain flat

Executives in search of Australian sales jobs should note the retail sector showed little improvement in November, according to figures released today (January 9th).

Retail turnover remained flat at 0.0 per cent, compared to a 0.2 per cent increase in October, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) revealed.

Certain industries achieved minimal growth, including cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services, which climbed just 0.1 per cent.

A number of regions enjoyed slightly more encouragingly results, with gains of 0.5 per cent experienced in Queensland and 0.8 per cent in Western Australia.

Trend turnover improved at the same rate for third consecutive month in November as it grew 0.3 per cent.

However, there were losses in clothing, foot wear and personal accessory retailing of 0.4 per cent, with turnover in Victoria declining 1.1 per cent, and further falls in the Australian Capital Territory of 1.9 per cent.

Last month, ABS figures suggested tourism continued to be a fruitful industry as it generated the equivalent of $94.8 million to the economy everyday between 2010 and 2011.
