Is the gender pay gap still apparent in sales jobs?

Women in sales jobs could still be finding themselves earning less than men, 40 years after the Equal Pay Act became law.

A spokesperson for the Trades Union Congress commented that while progress has been made over the years, "we are still a long way off closing the gender pay gap".

"Girls have been outperforming boys in education for over a decade, but this advantage has failed to fully translate into the workplace," she added.

However, a survey by Grazia magazine showed that nearly 50 per cent of women in work earn more (30 per cent) or as much (19 per cent) as their partners.

The TUC said that this gap can only be bridged if the "veil of secrecy around pay" is lifted and more flexible working options are made available to women.

This could be set to change when the Equality Act comes into practice in October, which should make pay levels more transparent in large businesses.
